Liverpool equal 11-year-old club record as Mario Balotelli leaves for Nice

Posted by

Mario Balotelli’s departure for Nice means Liverpool have now equalled a club record that’s stood for eleven years.

According to the Echo, the Italian striker is the 13th player to transfer away from the club this summer – and that number has only been reached once before.

That was back in 2005 after we won the Champions League. Much like Klopp today, that was also Rafa Benitez’s first full summer in charge.

Back then we sold or released the likes of Milan Baros, Vladimir Smicer, Antonio Nunez, and Igor Biscan.

Here are the 13 players who have been sold or released this summer:

Jose Enrique (released) Free
Kolo Toure (Celtic) Free
Jordan Rossiter (Rangers) £250,000
Joao Carlos Teixeira (FC Porto) £250,000
Jerome Sinclair (Watford) £4m
Martin Skrtel (Fenerbahce) £5.5m
Sergi Canos (Norwich) £2.5m
Jordon Ibe (Bournemouth) £15m
Brad Smith (Bournemouth) £3m
Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace) £27m
Joe Allen (Stoke) £13m
Luis Alberto (Lazio) £4.3m
Mario Balotelli (Nice) Free

Of course, that list doesn’t include any of our loanees – players like Danny Ward, Adam Bogdan, and Jon Flanagan have all left on a temporary basis.

Has it been a good summer? Are there any players who you were hoping would have been sold? Let us know in the comments…
