Sakho could end up further down the pecking order as Lucas nears return

How far down the pecking order was Mamadou Sakho?

If you keep in mind that Joe Gomez is injured, he was probably fourth choice behind Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, and Ragnar Klavan.

It looks like he’s about to move even further down that list, however, as Lucas Leiva says he is now ready to return to first-team action after an injury.

The Brazilian injured his hamstring last month against Huddersfield and has been out for a month while he recovers.

However, he played 45 minutes for the U23s last weekend and showed no ill-effects.

“I’m 100% I would say,” Lucas said (via Echo). “I didn’t miss much to be honest. I was only out for three-and-a-half weeks. I did a lot of training after that and played 45 minutes for the under-23s.

“I’m ready to go. I think I had a very good pre-season. I missed part of it but I think I’ve recovered. Now with the international break I have another two weeks to train hard and I feel very fit. I would say I’m now ready to play 90 minutes.”

Klopp has shown a willingness to play Lucas in defence on several occasions since he became our boss – and more often than not, Lucas has played extremely well.

All of which is bad news for Sakho. Will he even get a kick this season? Even in the League Cup, Klopp might play the youngsters rather than the French international.
