Liverpool accepted an actual £45m bid for flop eight months ago

This would have been a nice one to get done and dusted, but understandably, the player was having none of it.

Back in the January transfer window, Liverpool accepted a £45m offer from China for Christian Benteke, according to Tony Barrett in his new column for Joe.

However, the player didn’t feel the move was right, which is understandable for a 25-year-old striker with ambitions to play at the highest level in Europe.

As a result, Benteke toiled at Anfield for the remainder of last season, with it becoming increasingly clear he wasn’t in Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plans – before eventually sealing a £30m+ move to Crystal Palace this summer…

It’s not quite the mind-boggling £45m, but to recoup what we spent on Benteke in 2015, considering he simply wasn’t wanted, is a major transfer market achievement anyway.

Benteke hasn’t scored for the Eagles yet, but we back him to do pretty well in south London. His failure at Liverpool wasn’t entirely his fault, he just wasn’t suited stylistically to the new boss – so we wish him all the best.
