Christian Pulisic has been earning glowing reviews over in the United States this week.
He scored two goals and grabbed an assist in the USA’s win against minnows St Vincent and Grenadines last week – becoming his country’s youngest ever scorer in a World Cup qualifier in the process.
Since his performance, the American press have been falling over themselves to heap praise on the 17-year-old, with predictably comical results.
Here’s what Colin Cowherd said on Fox Sports:
“Christian Pulisic is the greatest potential American soccer player EVER. He is currently our best player. He is already at 17 playing in an elite German league. At 17 years old, he is already playing for Dortmund, he plays in front of 70,000 people.
“He’s not even a legal adult and he’s playing in World Cup qualifiers and putting on a clinic. His ball skills are so much better than anyone else on that team and he’s 17.”
Read that, laugh extensively, and then consider this: Pulisic has played just once for Dortmund this season, coming on as a late sub in a league game. Yep, once.
We made a late £11 million bid for the American in the transfer window, but Dortmund rebuffed our advances. According to media reports, we have not given up on doing a deal and will try again next summer as the player enters the final year of his deal.
