Midfield flop insists he has no regrets over miserable Anfield career

Mention the name Alberto Aquilani to most fans, and it immediately brings back memories of losing Xabi Alonso and missing out on Gareth Barry.

Aquilani was technically gifted and on paper could have been a great replacement for the outgoing Spaniard, but he arrived at the club with an ankle injury and struggled to ignite his time in the north-west.

After leaving Anfield he went to Fiorentina and Sporting Lisbon, but he has just signed for Serie A minnows, Pescara.

Now 32, he insists he has no regrets about his time with us, and even suggests he might have been a little bit hasty in deciding to return to Italy.

“I had a great time with Liverpool and I had the honour of wearing a special shirt and playing in an incredible stadium,” he said. “Then I decided to leave, and perhaps I was a bit hasty.

“Maybe I should have stayed and continued playing in the Premier League, but I wanted to come back to Italy for family reasons. Nobody forced me out.” (via Gazzetta Dello Sport, cited in Echo)

Why did it never work for the Italian at Anfield? After all, he has 38 caps for Italy and was loaned to Juventus and AC Milan whilst with us.
