Former Liverpool stopper says Karius should be handed his debut against Chelsea

Former Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland says it’s time for new signed Loris Karius to take Simon Mignolet’s place between the sticks.

Karius, who signed from Mainz in the summer, looked set to start the season as number one, but a broken hand sustained against Chelsea in a pre-season friendly kept him out of action for two months. However, he is not fit again and ready to apply pressure on the Belgian.

“I would have thrown Karius in last Saturday,” said Kirkland. “If he was brought in as No 1 and he’s training and ready then throw him in. You can’t really build up to games in the Premier League.

“If he’s ready now after a couple of weeks training then he needs to get to the real thing. Chelsea away, if he has a fantastic game everyone will be happy.” (Echo).

If it was up to us, we wouldn’t start him against Chelsea tomorrow. The defence needs to remain consistent against what is a very strong Chelsea attack.

However, we absolutely would start him against Derby County in the League Cup third round next Wednesday. it’s a great chance for him to bed into a competitive environment and work with the defence under less pressure.

When would you give him his debut? Let us know in the comments down below.
