How to get yourself in Liverpool fans’ good books, by Joel Matip!
Liverpool’s Cameroonian centre-back Joel Matip has stoked the fires ahead of tonight’s game with Chelsea, by claiming he doesn’t ‘give a f**k’ about Diego Costa.
The Spaniard has begun this season in impressive style, adapting to Antonio Conte’s methods seamlessly and bagging four goals so far – a quarter of his entire tally last term already.
But Matip, who in his own right has impressed just as much at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, is relishing the upcoming battle.
“If an opponent tries to talk to me during the game, really, I don’t give a f***. They can say what they want,” he told the Evening Standard.
“I don’t think anyone is like Costa. You can play against players who like to make you uncomfortable, but not too many with his size or as famous as him.
“It is always a fight against these big teams and you have to take on the battle. You have to go in there and fight, there is nothing else. As a defender, that is something you like – to go out there and win the ball.”
Costa has had many run-ins with Liverpool previously. He’s stamped on Emre Can and Martin Skrtel before, and famously got stared down by Jordan Henderson as well!
The brutish striker is an excellent player though, that much we know – and it’ll up to Matip and Dejan Lovren – his probable centre-back partner – to keep him at bay.
If Liverpool can pick up a result tonight, it would confirm a wonderful start to the season in which we’ve already beat Arsenal and Premier League champions Leicester City.
