Milner’s biggest concern about playing left-back laid bare by Klopp in interview

James Milner has always had a reputation for being something of a utility man.

When he was a City player, their fans used to joke that the only place he had not played for them was in goal – and now we are starting to see what they meant with our own eyes.

He was moved to left-back at the start of the season by Klopp as Alberto Moreno was dropped after six months of poor form.

It’s proved to be a shrewd move – Milner is now a vital cog in both our attacking and defensive line-up, and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

But in an interview with SkySports on their Monday Night Football, Klopp has revealed that Milner wasn’t overly keen on the idea for one main reason:

“I remember speaking to Milly the first time about possibly playing left-back and said: ‘what do you think?’,” he said.

“He said: ‘but I won’t get the ball’. I said: ‘forget this, you will get the ball much more often than you can imagine’.”

Are you happy with Milner at left-back, or do you still think we need a “natural” full-back in January?
