Judge Jordan Henderson on Jordan Henderson, not by the man that went before him (Steven Gerrard), says Steven Gerrard…
Our legendary former skipper, now at LA Galaxy and considering his next steps, has spoken about some of the criticism his predecessor has received over the past 12 months.
Last term, an injury plagued Henderson failed to live up to his armband or ability and many Liverpool fans believed he wasn’t a long-term captain or midfield option. He was unfairly compared to Gerrard, who’s one of the best midfielders European football has ever seen and should be considered in a league of his own. But this campaign, following a solid pre-season after the Euros, Henderson’s shone in a new holding midfield role.
From here, he’s led the side, helped us control possession and started some attacks from deep, too.
“I think criticism happens a lot in football, I’ve had it myself. It’s all about different eras,” Gerrard told Radio City Talk.
“We see players described as the next Paul Gascoigne, the next Bobby Moore. People have got to judge Jordan Henderson for Jordan Henderson. What does he give to the team, what does he give to his team-mates around him?”
As a result of Henderson’s excellent form, Emre Can currently finds himself out of the side, something we wouldn’t have imagined possible in 2015/16.
It proves that nothing in football is permanent and players can transform their seemingly decided fortunes in a matter of weeks.
