Ex-Red explains what he admires most about Wijnaldum in gushing interview

Former Reds midfielder Ray Houghton says he is hugely impressed with how Gini Wijnaldum has settled into life at Liverpool after a difficult season with Newcastle.

Gini was part of the Benitez side that got relegated at the end of last season, and Houghton says it can mentally tough to bounce back so quickly.

“I have got huge admiration for the man,” he said.

“It’s never easy when you have been at a club which got relegated; you start to doubt yourself as player.

“He got his opportunity to come to Liverpool and he has settled in straightaway. He has played in every game in the league and has been outstanding playing a bit deeper.” (via LFCTV, cited on Inside Futbol)

Wijnaldum has been an ever-present in the starting eleven so far this term, though he has been subbed off four times – against Swansea, Chelsea, Leicester, and Arsenal.

He was part of a bidding war between us and Spurs over the summer after he made it apparent that he did not want to spend a whole season in England’s second tier. Luckily for us, we emerged with his signature after Spurs balked at the price.
