Gini Wijnaldum impresses as Netherlands thump Belarus

Posted by

Belarus might not be up to much, but it was a cathartic night for the Dutch as they thumped the Eastern European minnows 4-1 in Amsterdam.

The Netherlands have struggled since they reached the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup and failed to qualify for this summer’s Euros in France.

In their last game, a friendly against Greece, they were beaten 2-1 at home – a match in with Wijnaldum scored.

There was no goal for Gini tonight, but he completed a full 90 minutes and was a metronomic beat in the heart of the Dutch midfield. (Soccerway)

Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes put the hosts 2-0 up after half an hour. Alexei Rios pulled one back for Belarus just after the break, but further goals from Klassen and Janssen made sure the Netherlands won all three points.

The result leaves them top of Group A after two games. They drew 1-1 with Sweden in their opener. Next up is a trip to France next week.
