Klopp demands mutual respect at Anfield on Monday night

Jurgen Klopp has demanded that both Liverpool supporters and Man Utd supporters show each other mutual respect at Anfield on Monday.

Recent games between the two have been marred by chants from both sets of supporters mocking the Munich and Hillsborough tragedies.

Tempers boiled over in the last 16 of the Europa League last spring as fights broke out in the stands and fans damaged the stadium. Seats were thrown and flares were lit in Old Trafford.

Both clubs were fined and given a slap on the wrist by UEFA for the events.

“This sport is about big respect. You face the biggest opponents and play football against them. That’s the kind of battle where we should really show who is the best in the moment,” said Klopp (Echo).

96 Liverpool fans died during the FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough in 1989 after poor policing led to overcrowding in one end of the ground. In 1958, eight United players died after their plane caught fire and crashed on the runway at Munich airport. 15 other people also died in the disaster.
