Liverpool coach hails Jurgen Klopp tactic as key to team’s success

Liverpool’s first team development coach Pepijn Lijnders has pinpointed Jurgen Klopp’s high pressing style of play as the key to the team’s impressive start to the campaign.

Lijnders has worked closely with Klopp in helping to implement the ‘gegenpressing’ that has troubled Liverpool’s opponents this season.

He told Voetbal International: “The counter-press is such a powerful weapon to create opportunities, a moment of chaos in which we exploit the spaces, creating openings.”

“We are capable of long periods of possession, but at the same time to attack, coming between the lines where it is dangerous.”

The Dutchman was one of few to maintain his coaching role at the club when Brendan Rodgers was sacked and has had time to reflect on the months he has worked alongside Klopp.

He said: “Jurgen Klopp I can only qualify as a top coach and a very good man. He is a linker, someone who creates unity. And besides his infectious enthusiasm Klopp knows very well where he wants to go.”

It is very clear that members of the coaching staff such as Lijnders share the ideologies of the manager and that this is contributing to the much needed cohesiveness around the club.

Our players have also quickly bought into Klopp’s desired high intensity and high pressing style of play and are now finding the finishing touches that is ensuring we make the most of the good positions we are winning the ball in.

Keep up the good work, Pep.
