Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney were in the headlines yesterday evening, and not because of either their poor punditry or poor form.
Instead, it was because of Owen’s tweet in support of Liverpool ahead of yesterday’s game in which he hoped for a 2-0 win that’d have sent us to the top of the table.
Come on Red Men. A win by two goals and it’s ‘top of the league’. pic.twitter.com/hDAn2rwPkO

Rooney instantly responded, questioning the veracity of Owen’s claims.
Interesting this Michael I thought you was a united fan??? https://t.co/NjOZ0N1fCr

It might have been reasonable to assume that was the end of the banter – but alas, no.
Owen didn’t take long to hit back, claiming Liverpool were his first love and wondering about Rooney’s own allegiances.
Naughty @WayneRooney! Always want my old teams to win but Liverpool are my first love. What about you? Once a Blue always a Blue? :-)

Rooney wasn’t about to take it lying down.
Ok sorry mate I actually thought you was an Everton fan as a kid but I was obviously wrong if Liverpool was your 1st love ??? https://t.co/WGaOyOnxYm

So, is that the end of the shenanigans? Let’s hope so for all our sakes!

Owen, of course, was a Liverpool golden boy in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His relationship with the fanbase started to turn sour after he opted not to give new Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez a chance a move to Madrid in the summer of 2004. He struggled in Spain, while we won the Champions League.
The final nail in the coffin game when he left Newcastle to join Man Utd in 2009. Many fans have not forgiven him since.
