Christian Benteke plays down importance of Liverpool reunion

Posted by

We will go up against former striker Christian Benteke when we play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park next weekend.

The Belgian frontman lasted barely 12 months on Merseyside following a largely unsuccessful £32.5 million move from Aston Villa in the summer of 2015.

He barely featured in the first team after Xmas, as he fell behind Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge, and Divock Origi in the pecking order.

After a “will he / won’t he” transfer saga that dragged on through most of the summer, he eventually put pen to paper on a deal with the London club. We managed to recoup almost all the money we paid for him.

However, he has played down his upcoming reunion:

“I am looking forward to every game, not just against Liverpool,” said Benteke, following the defeat at Leicester City.

“Of course, I am going to be happy because I will play against my old team-mates, but I am focused on every game.” (Evening Standard)

He has scored three goals in the league so far for his new club, all three of which came in a 20-day spell in mid-September as the Eagles beat Sunderland and ‘Boro and drew with Everton.

Let’s hope he doesn’t score his first goal in nearly a month next weekend!
