Klopp names surprise Liverpool ace as club’s best tackler

Jurgen Klopp is close to awarding Kevin Stewart a contract extension and it’s clear he rates the 23-year-old pretty highly.

Last night, the former Tottenham ace put in a solid performance at the base of midfield against his old club, creating our attackers a platform from which they could produce the goods.

He made tackles and interceptions aplenty and according to his manager, he’s the best destroyer in Liverpool’s entire squad – including the likes of Lucas, Emre Can and the array of centre-backs at Klopp’s disposal.

“He was very important. I have said a few times, he’s the best challenger in the squad,” Klopp told the Mirror.

“One-on-one he is really ugly to play against. He’s a good footballer, good player and he had a good game. Very good.”

Stewart’s statistics from the 2-1 EFL Cup win were pretty tidy, too.

With captain Jordan Henderson the starting anchorman for Liverpool now, Stewart’s likely to be used as backup throughout this campaign – but he has the right attitude to do it.

When we’re winning and need to shore up the midfield, he seems the perfect option to bring on from the bench.

At the beginning of last term, he was failing on loan at Swindon, so the improvement he’s made is mightily impressive.
