Souness explains his nagging doubts over a potential title charge

Graeme Souness has explained that he is not convinced we have what it takes to mount a serious title bid this season.

Despite sitting joint top of the table with 23 points from a possible 30 so far this season, the former midfield hardman is concerned about the porous nature of our defensive unit.

“When they are on the front foot, they are fabulous,” he said (TalkSport).

“On the front foot, they are as good as anyone – maybe the best – right now. But when the game changes, when you don’t dominate from start to finish, you have got to sense that.

“Maybe the wide midfield players have to play a wee bit narrower, the full-backs don’t wander, and you have got to sense that. It doesn’t have to come from the manager. And I see Liverpool right now and think, is that a fast forward gear from the first minute right to the very end of the game?

“They look a wee bit vulnerable at times when they don’t dominate the game.”

We conceded another two goals at the weekend, one of which clearly should have been avoided, and the other of which probably should have been avoided.

And so far we have only kept one clean sheet in the league, ironically against Jose “I don’t like attacking” Mourinho and his bus-parking United team.

Even in the League Cup, our two-game streak of clean sheets came to an end as soon as we faced Premier League opponents in the last round.

What’s your opinion on our leaky defence? Surely we Souness is right, we really need to stop conceding so many goals if we are serious about a title bid?
