The history worth remembering
Liverpool Football Club is not your regular professional football club. This team has such a great history that many only dream about. Founded in 1892 after a small quarrel within the high ranks of Everton, Liverpool rose to its glory in 1970-80s. Over 20 years of magnificent performances earned them love of fans all over the world. Just a simple list of their trophies taken during that period may require a whole separate article.
Liverpool won 18 titles over the course of its history and 11 of them were won in the period from 1972 to 1990. Led by legendary Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, Liverpool managed to win 11 domestic titles and 7 European titles. This is a truly incredible run and its mark is something worth remembering.
While the history is still capable of carrying the team both financially and competitively, everyone understands that Liverpool needs results and being second is not even an achievement to be proud of for a team that has 18 domestic titles embroiling cabinets in their halls. Yes, Liverpool is still one of the richest clubs that brings over $450 million in revenue annually (ranked 9th in the world rankings of the most profitable professional football clubs) and specialists estimate the total worth of the club to be well over $1.5 billion.
Club merchandise is still as popular and fans are still zealously buying tickets up, but it’s time the side collected title no.19…
Liverpool has been going through a rough patch lately. The club ended up 8th in the Premier League last season and 6th a season before that. Yes, previously to that, Liverpool was a runner-up and showed more than a satisfying performance in the 2013-2014 season. The club scored over 100 goals in the regular season securing its spot as the highest scoring runner-up in the history of the PL. However, it was still not enough to obtain the so-desired Championship title.
While the 2013-14 season was truly a promising one and gave to fans some optimism, the following seasons were less so. The team struggled to win important matches and ended up not even making it to TOP. While Everton fans would call it a good run, Liverpool fans feel rightfully disappointed. The team has been close to winning so many times over the course of last two decades, yet the title was still outside of their reach.
Jurgen Klopp is a perfect man for the job. This is a coach notorious for his ability to create champions. Klopp received the Coach of the year award twice while working with Borussia Dortmund leading the team to back-to-back Bundesliga titles. Before that, he managed to polish a football division with Mainz 05 and lead them to their first promotion to Bundesliga. Note that this team had not been able to ascend to the top league for a long time. Founded in 1905, Mainz 05 struggled to get out of the 2nd division for nearly a century. Jurgen Klopp made a shy dream a wonderful reality.
However, this time, the dream is much more ambitious. Not only he has to win one of the hardest leagues in Europe, but do so with style. Liverpool is no stranger to winning. Despite not finishing first, this team has not experienced a bitter taste of relegation for seemingly forever. This is a team that has a legacy and forged to wear a crown. Jurgen Klopp is not coming to make a swan out of a goose, but to make a swan more beautiful and graceful than before. The latter is often harder than the former.
He came in relatively late in October, 2015. However, some of his decisions and the atmosphere of the team indicate that he is on the right track. Liverpool’s recent results under the management of Klopp were quite impressive. The club acquired 7 league points while playing away. All three wins were against tough opponents, former champions, and strong middle-of- the-pack teams. Amongst defeated squads one could find Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, and Spurs. These are not some bottom-tier teams, but strong contenders for the title.
Jurgen Klopp also builds a very capable team to make sure that this season will be more interesting for a spectator. One of the most notable additions to the squad is Sadio Mane who was purchased from Southampton for over $40 million. The young Senegal superstar is a phenomenal player with steady aim and truly remarkable physique. He has demonstrated his monstrous potential while playing for Southampton managing to set a new record in the Premier League: The fastest hat-trick. Sadio Mane opens up a lot of viable strategies making team’s offence versatile and explosive when needed. Another great offensive player is Roberto Firmino. This versatile Brazilian can easily fill any position in the attacking formation. He can act as an attacking midfielder or a wild-card winger or an unrelentless clean forward. This versatility allowed this footballer to score 12 goals during his 36 appearances last term. Note that he is also very young and ambitious.
However, one of the most important things for the roster is that Adam Lallana looks like a monster right now. He is a great domestic talent and one of the most capable English players available to Jurgen Klopp. Lallana is 28 right now and he is surely close to his peak form. This player has not been this good ever.
The potential is here…
Liverpool surely looks promising and the beginning of this season was quite optimistic. However, we still need to remember that one needs more than just a good start and capable players to become a champion. While Jurgen Klopp is notorious for meticulously building a perfect team and navigating it through tactical and strategical debris to the title, some teams also need motivation.
The potential is definitely here. A capable manager, a team of true superstars, and a whole army of fans behind their backs. The only problem is… The same potential has been here for decades.
The potential is not enough. At the same time, we need to give Jurgen Klopp some time to build a team capable of winning one of the most competitive leagues in the world, if not the most competitive one. He had less than a year to start his agenda and the results are apparent. Klopp certainly knows his occupation well enough and slowly, brick-by- brick, constructs a mechanism fuelled with passion and motivation that can definitely win the Premier League.
If there is a right moment for Liverpool for winning the title, the nearest seasons are most suitable for that. The team is packed with talent, has a firm guiding hand of Jurgen Klopp, and more than a full season to reach its top form. Hopefully, the sun will shine soon for Liverpool fans!
