Gerrard’s expected new role at Liverpool explained

Steven Gerrard is in advanced discussions with Liverpool over a return to the club, but not in a playing capacity, following his release from MLS franchise LA Galaxy.

Goal’s Melissa Reddy yesterday claimed that the 36-year-old is likely to join up with Alex Inglethorpe at the Academy and our sources suggest the same.

Typically, Gerrard doesn’t want a symbolic role but one in which he actively helps the club. We currently have a number of extremely talented youngsters on the books, such as Ovie Ejaria, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn, Toni Gomes and Rhian Brewster – who could learn a substantial amount from the greatest midfielder and captain to represent Liverpool.

Inglethorpe, who’s recently signed a lengthy contact extension, would love Gerrard on board – so there’ll be no power-clash – but a chance for Gerrard to learn himself and pass on his wealth of experience in equal measure.

No final decision has been made and Gerrard has also received tonnes of playing offers, too – but if he does decide to hang up his boots – a romantic return to the club he loves seems the most likely destination.

Imagine a future when both Jurgen Klopp and Gerrard are manically celebrating on the touchline! Beautiful!
