Liverpool man shows his appreciation for defensive partner’s performance against Southampton

Reds defender Joel Matip was at the forefront of praise directed at Liverpool yesterday but the centre-back has turned the attention towards his partner Dejan Lovren.

Speaking after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Southampton, Matip told Liverpoolfc.com: “He did very well for the whole 95 minutes and played a wonderful game.”

“He always helps me and he did well.”

Matip’s arrival at Liverpool seems to have coincided with the impact Jurgen Klopp has manager, in inspiring Lovren to rediscover the form that earned him the big money move from Southampton in the first place.

Both central defenders appear to be having a positive influence on one another, which bodes well when it comes to the two striking up a solid partnership moving forward.

Lovren struggled during the early stages of his Anfield career but has since managed to reach performance levels somewhere near to his very best.

Alongside Matip, he kept Southampton’s, albeit unambitious, attacking players at bay throughout yesterday’s goalless draw.

The pair protected goalkeeper Loris Karius well and were largely responsible for helping their side to a first clean sheet in 12 Premier League away games.

Helping to earn clean sheets on a more regular basis poses as the task ahead for these two men.
