Lionel Messi is the best footballer on the planet right now, by some distance.
Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Neymar are all exceptional world-beaters, but the Argentine genius is in a league of his own.
So the fact Messi has claimed Steven Gerrard is England’s best ever footballer speaks volumes.
“Personally, I think Gerrard is England’s greatest ever player. I wish him a happy retirement,” said Barcelona’s star yesterday, after Gerrard hung up his boots.
High praise indeed considering the likes of Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore have represented the Three Lions.
An enormous number of legendary figures took to social media to congratulate Gerrard on his monumental career yesterday, including the likes of Javier Zanetti, Francesco Totti, Lothar Matthaus, Thiery Henry and Kaka to name but a few.
His legacy will live on forever and we can now enjoy our memories of the greatest midfielder and most inspirational captain to ever pull on our famous red.
Gerrard was voted into the World Team of the Year on three occasions. He made the Premier League Team of the Year on seven, winning more Premier League Player of the Month awards (6) than anybody else, too.
