The Dutch international was a rumoured target for Jurgen Klopp but the German manager now looks set to turn a focus towards strengthening in other areas of the pitch.
19-year-old Joe Gomez has recently returned from a serious knee injury and poses as a fresh option at centre-back for Liverpool.
Joel Matip is also expected to return from a minor injury and reclaim his place at the heart of the Liverpool defence.
It seems the departure of Sadio Mane as a result of the African Cup of Nations will result in Klopp prioritising an attacking signing instead.
