Lucas Leiva describes what legendary Liverpool pair were like on Merseyside derby day

Lucas Leiva is without question one of the most qualified Liverpool players when it comes to understanding what is required in the Merseyside derby, having played in 15 of them himself.

There is perhaps no other player on this team more suited to a tough tackling clash with Everton than the Brazilian. He is made for games like this.

It remains to be seen whether or not he will get the chance to make his mark on the game but his knowledge and presence within the squad alone will be crucial in letting those around him know what is at stake.

Speaking in the latest episode of #LFCWorld, he was quoted by Liverpoolfc.com as saying: “With every derby I feel more emotion, more passion. I remember when I first came, how Stevie and Carra used to be on the day of the derby; they were just different on that day. They were electric, I remember Carra couldn’t stay quiet!”

“There are no favourites in the derby, it’s a different game from any other, and comes down to who wants it more. Normally it’s decided by the small details.”

The Merseyside derby was made for the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

We dread to imagine the kind of backlash a player would get from Carra if he thought they weren’t putting in the effort.

Lucas’ experience playing with both men has clearly had an impact on the way he now approaches the game.

Derby games are unique. Form is forgotten and it comes down to who is prepared to fight for 90 minutes. If the players want to win as much as Lucas does, then we should be fine.
