Why Klopp pulled plug on Julian Draxler pursuit revealed

The only transfer more expensive than Julian Draxler’s PSG switch this January was Oscar’s bizarre move to China.

The 23-year-old moved to France from Wolfsburg, where he’d endured a rough ride since signing in 2015…

But the young German playmaker is extremely talented, and it turns out Liverpool were very keen on his signature this January transfer window.

We struggled badly without Sadio Mane, and fans were perplexed by the fact we didn’t bring in another attacking option to play on either flank.

Klopp liked Draxler a lot though, but reportedly gave up the chase when he felt the playmaker was playing us off against the French champions for a larger contract.

The trusted David Maddox in the Mirror, writes:

“Liverpool DID want signings. Jurgen Klopp was seriously keen on Julian Draxler and went deep into negotiations with the Germany international. But he pulled the plug when the midfielder tried to use PSG’s interest to push up his salary.”

This makes sense, to us. The fact Draxler, about to enter his peak years, chose Ligue 1, says a lot about his ambition to play at the highest level. Klopp has always said he wants players to ‘drive the train’, not ‘board it’, and it seems Draxler doesn’t have the sufficient mentality.

Come the summer, we’ll make additions – but for now – we’ve got 15 games to confirm a top four spot with the current bunch.
