Six positions Liverpool must fix in this summer’s transfer window after January failure

We made no transfers in January, but we’ll certainly enter the transfer market during the summer following a catastrophic run of form from Jurgen Klopp’s team.

If we buy top (or at least very good) players in these six positions we’ll be delighted.

Chelsea have Courtois, Arsenal have Cech, Spurs have Lloris and United have De Gea. Our two keepers are nowhere near on that level. Not since Pepe Reina’s early seasons have we had a top keeper between our sticks. Please Liverpool: buy one.

Surely a priority considering our miserable defensive record? Joel Matip probably has a long-term future at centre-back, but the place alongside him badly needs filing. Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Lucas are all not good enough and teenage Joe Gomez cannot yet be relied on full-time.

James Milner has done well, largely, but his defensive mishaps in the past month prove we need a natural option here. He’s also not created as much as we’d perhaps have hoped for a natural winger, and the fact he doesn’t have a strong left-foot limits him.

Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum lack creativity, sadly. Jordan Henderson has some, but he’s best at the base of midfield and we need another option who can make things happen against defensive sides.

Why we didn’t sign sign a fast, natural winger in January is madness. Sadio Mane represents the only one in the squad and we’ve missed him badly when he’s not been available. We need pacy options on the flanks who can stretch sides and take on fullbacks. One of these is a necessity.

With Daniel Sturridge potentially over the hill at 27, Liverpool have a problem: a squad without a natural goalscoring forward who also suits Jurgen Klopp’s demands. Roberto Firmino is good centrally but simply doesn’t score enough goals and isn’t especially fast either. The problem is that players who have these traits and are better than our current bunch are very, very expensive.
