Jurgen Klopp criticises Simon Mignolet amid suggestions Karius will be recalled

Simon Mignolet is one of many Liverpool players who didn’t cover himself in glory last week.

He made up for his mistake against Chelsea with a penalty save, but committed a horrible error against Hull City on Saturday which set the tone for our miserable 2-0 defeat.

When it seemed easier to hold on, Mignolet dropped the ball at the feet of Hull’s attacker, but there were no Liverpool defenders in sight and Jurgen Klopp has blamed the whole team for their roles in that horrible goal.

“That is another thing. We have to show a reaction. That’s how it is. We are causing (ourselves) problems,” Klopp told the Echo.

“For sure, Mignolet was not alone around the goal, but he had it nearly in his hands, so he cannot ignore this.

“We don’t rely on results, we see the things, I saw already the whole set piece. Formation wise, it’s not right, not in one second of this set piece and I have no idea why.

“It’s all about concentration, it’s all about being really in the game and finding the answer now after a defeat which really hurts, not only myself but the players too.

“Putting ourselves under pressure is kind of a hobby right now and we have to show the reaction, but I cannot show it here now.”

We have a week off before the Spurs clash, and Klopp will decide during training whether Loris Karius should replace Mignolet, or whether to keep faith with the Belgian.

For us, it makes sense to bring Karius back in. The younger German was dropped originally for making the kind of mistakes Mignolet is now, but was very good during the cup fixtures in January when deployed, unlike his team-mates.

It’s not like our backline can get any worse, and it’s clearly time for Klopp to shuffle his pack after a run which has seen just one win in ten matches.
