Liverpool’s captain makes plea to team-mates

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has issued a rallying cry ahead of today’s crunch Premier League clash with Spurs.

We don’t need to remind supporters that 2017 has been catastrophic, winning one game in ten, exiting both cups and falling out of the top four when on New Year’s Eve, we were Chelsea’s main competitors.

Today, we have a chance to start righting the wrongs of January and early February. Jurgen Klopp has practically a fully fit squad to choose from and Liverpool have had a week on the training ground to prepare.

In short, there’s no excuses…

“January wasn’t what any of us had hoped for and it certainly wasn’t what any of us expected, from ourselves as individuals or the team,” Henderson writes in the match-day programme, cited in the Mirror.

“Everyone at the club, from players through to all the staff, have worked extremely hard up until now and it’s vital we don’t let all that hard work go to waste because of a difficult January.

“It’s on us to ensure it was a ‘bad month’ and not a bad season.”

Our form this calendar year makes it easy to forget how good some of our players have been, but before Christmas, Henderson was superb. He still leads the Premier League for passing and distance covered stats and has truly excelled in the deep-lying midfield role.

He does however need some creative players alongside him, as with Gini Wijnaldum and Emre Can either side, we’ve lacked spark. With all the players back though, Adam Lallana can play to Henderson’s left and Wijnaldum to the right. This is the trio that has performed best this term. Hopefully we’ll see it tonight.
