Klopp explains why he’s taking Liverpool to Spain for a mini ‘pre-season’

Liverpool are travelling to La Manga resort in Spain, where Jurgen Klopp will allow his players to rest before undergoing a second ‘pre-season’, with just 13 games left of the Premier League campaign.

We beat Spurs at Anfield on Saturday evening, so the squad will be feeling positive ahead of the warm weather break.

Our next fixture isn’t scheduled until February 27th, meaning we have two weeks off. There’s a possibility though if Leicester draw their FA Cup tie this coming weekend, they’ll have to play a replay on the weekend our game was meant to be – meaning our tie at the King Power could be postponed and we’ll have three weeks off instead of two!

Considering we played ten times in January, that seems crazy, but Klopp doesn’t mind at all – as it gives him more time with his players on the training ground.

“We have 14-15 days, so there are two or three days rest and then pre-season for the rest of the season,” he told the Echo. “That’s how we understand the situation.

“We have to use this. Whatever I say tonight won’t really help. We have to use the time to show the team why we are there (near the top of the table).

“It’s not a shame (we have no game next week). I love football but I have no problem where we can really train.

“We want to use the time and hopefully everybody can see that, that would make sense.”

Klopp used t0 regularly take his Borussia Dortmund team to the sunny Spanish resort during the Bundesliga’s winter break, but the venue is quite notorious with English football. In 1998, Paul Gascoigne smashed up a hotel room after Glen Hoddle told him he hadn’t made the World Cup squad, while in 2000, Leicester City’s players were banned after three days of partying.

Hopefully this will be a much less raucous occasion!
