Gerrard pays tribute to 109-goal man who could have led Liverpool to title

It’s hard not to wonder about what Liverpool could have achieved had Luis Suarez stayed at the club.

Perhaps Brendan Rodgers would still be here. Perhaps we could have won a Premier League title.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of last night’s Champions League tie between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard turned his attention towards his former teammate.

“There’s so many good teams in the Premier League but he would have given Liverpool a better chance,” he said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“You’re guaranteed goals, assists, he just causes every opposition problems and creates a lot of space for the players around him.”

“He’s relentless – that’s the word to sum him up. He scores great goals, all type of goals, he creates out of nothing.”

“He occupies the whole back four by himself. He was an absolute dream to play with. He was always on the move so that you could pick him out. Just a phenomenal footballer. He’s gone to another level since he moved to Barcelona with his goal and assist return.”

He was undoubtedly one of the greatest strikers ever to play for the club and it was an absolute joy to watch him during his time on Merseyside. There was nothing the man couldn’t do.

That said, the Uruguayan didn’t enjoy the best Valentine’s Day evening as Barcelona were thrashed 4-0 away to PSG in a last 16 clash that now looks beyond the La Liga giants.

It will prove to be just a minor blip in what has otherwise been an incredible few years for Suarez. After scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances for Liverpool, he has gone on to find the back of the net 109 times in 128 games for Barcelona.
