Xabi Alonso is seriously the coolest man in football.
At a time when the spotlight was on him following his announcement of retirement, he still spotted an opportunity to remind his current boss at Bayern Munich and former AC Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti of that famous night in Istanbul.
He didn’t even need to finish his sentence to get the room full of journalists laughing as he reflected on Liverpool’s remarkable Champions League final win in 2005.
An all too familiar cheeky smile and a pat on the back for Ancelotti proved to be a reminder of what a great professional and popular figure Alonso has been throughout his career.
The Spaniard will forever be considered as one of the most talented midfielders to have played at this club and of course as a key member of that European Cup-winning squad 12 years ago.
He has been a joy to watch at every club he has been at and we wish him all the best for the future.
