‘Lukaku joining Sadio Mane at Liverpool is just too scary for words’

Garth Crooks, pundit extraordinaire, makes some pretty outrageous statements.

That, we’ve become accustomed to, but today he’s spoken up the idea of Everton’s 20-goal hitman Romelu Lukaku signing for… Liverpool!

While the anger it would cause from across Stanley Park would make it worth it, there really is about a zero percent chance of it happening.

Still, Crooks wrote for BBC Sport: “I can think of a number of top teams at home and abroad who would pay considerably more for Lukaku than Everton spent bringing him to the club.

“Manchester United need to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic sooner rather than later. Chelsea have doubts about retaining Diego Costa because of the interests of China.

“Arsenal will need rebuilding post-Arsene Wenger – and Lukaku joining Sadio Mane at Liverpool is just too scary for words.”

Lukaku plunders goals for fun at Premier League level, and is still only 23-years-old. He’s not signing a new contract for the Bitters as he wants Champions League football, which they cannot give him.

But the likely £70m-odd fee it will take to buy him is steep, especially as he doesn’t necessarily have the attributes we require from a forward under Jurgen Klopp. The Belgian can finish, but his touch isn’t great and he doesn’t make the kind of selfless runs which would benefit our other attackers – like Roberto Firmino – for example.

Not going to happen!
