During January, Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum gave a fairly good impression of two players who really couldn’t play together.
Either side of Jordan Henderson in a midfield three, they struggled to impose themselves on games or provide any quality from players awarded box-to-box licences.
But yesterday against Manchester City, both were superb – undeniably Liverpool’s best two players are at the Etihad (despite Sadio Mane’s odd Man of the Match award).
Physically, there were exceptional, bullying City and driving through the middle of the park. Can showed wonderful sprayed passes and Wijnaldum used his body fantastically to shield the ball.
On this basis, we might not need central midfield reinforcements after all.
