Liverpool are already in discussions with Southampton about a summer deal for superb centre-back Virgil van Dijk, reports Football Whispers.
Sam Maguire, the journalist who penned the story, is a friend of EOTK and not someone who’d make up a transfer rumour. Whether his information is legitimate is a different matter of course…
Their story suggests we’re talking to Southampton about the fee they’d require for the 25-year-old. The Saints want £50m but we’re keen to barter them down to £40m – something we apparently believe is possible.
Van Dijk’s agency also represents Jordan Henderson, Nathaniel Clyne and Divock Origi, and we obviously have a big history of signing Southampton’s best players, which is reportedly making Liverpool’s hierarchy confident a deal can be struck.
If it does get done, it’ll eclipse our £35m record transfer, set way back in January 2011 when we wasted a large bulk of our Fernando Torres money on Andy Carroll.
It’s a lot of cash for a centre-back, but Van Dijk is superb and would walk straight into our troubled backline. The thought of a partnership between him and Joel Matip is a mighty exciting prospect.
