Matip: How Liverpool will stop Lukaku

Posted by

Liverpool’s centre-half Joel Matip has said there’s no special arrangement to stop Romelu Lukaku, the Premier League’s in-form striker, on Saturday lunchtime…

The Toffees make the trip across Stanley Park tomorrow, with the Belgian hitman certain to start up top having already bagged 21 top flight goals this term.

He’s always played well against Liverpool too, but Matip reckons it’ll be a team effort to stop him – rather than an individual one.

“He is a brilliant striker and player,” he said. “It’ll be a really hard challenge but do it as we always do – as a team, defending and attacking. I’m hoping it’ll work.

“We have seen a lot of games, we will see a few videos, we will do it together. There will be no special talk about Lukaku. We all know his qualities and he is always good for a goal, so we will try our best not to let this happen.”

We expect Dejan Lovren to start alongside the Cameroonian, with Nathaniel Clyne at right-back and James Milner at left-back – our first-choice defence when everyone’s fit.

Liverpool kept a clean-sheet against Everton at Goodison Park, winning 1-0 thanks to Sadio Mane’s late tap-in, and a similar result would be a thing of beauty this time around!

If we can keep Lukaku quiet, our chances of success will be undeniably much greater.
