LFC tried to convince €100m striker to sign before his break through

This could well end up as another one of those ‘ones who got away’, like when we signed Harry Kewell over Cristiano Ronaldo and let Spurs get hold of Dele Alli…

(Slightly different levels of player, granted.)

According to French publication L’Equipe, translated by Sport Witness, Liverpool tried to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco before the striker broke into the first-team.

The 18-year-old is now the hottest property in world football having bagged 19 goals in all competitions this term, but there was a time when his future was up in the air.

We spoke to Mbappe and his representatives, but Leonardo Jardim gave him the first-team football he required and the rest will go down in history.

L’Equipe already claim the teenager is worth €100m, which in today’s market, actually seems about right.

Manchester City and Arsenal also tried to poach him, but none of us managed to convince him to switch.

Make no mistake, Mbappe is special. Watching him in the Champions League Last 16 tie with City was jaw-dropping, in truth.

But now, he seems destined for Real Madrid, unless Liverpool decide to break the world transfer record this summer!

You never know…
