James Pearce provides immediate clarification on Fabregas to Liverpool story

For any Reds getting excited about Liverpool’s rumoured pursuit of Cesc Fabregas, you can quickly get ‘unexcited’!

James Pearce, the Echo’s respected Liverpool correspondent, has rubbished the Express’s morning exclusive just after hours after it began to circle the internet.

‘Anfield officials have rubbished suggestions that they are locked in a battle with rivals Manchester United to secure the 29-year-old services,’ Pearce claimed today.

Fabregas isn’t a regular starter for Antonio Conte’s title favourites and could move on this summer as result, but it won’t be to Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp not shortlisting the World Cup Spaniard.

Instead, he wants Red Bull Leipzig’s Naby Keita, the all-action Guinean enjoying a fantastic breakthrough season in Germany.

Keita is just 22-years-old and provides unbelievable box-to-box physicality, something that would suit Klopp’s energetic footballing demands.

Fabregas is an extremely gifted technical player, but in Coutinho and Adam Lallana, we already have younger players of his ilk in the starting XI.

Time will tell if we’re able to secure Keita’s services, and whether in-form Emre Can will renew his terms as well.
