James Pearce names Klopp’s mammoth likely transfer budget during Q&A

Jurgen Klopp is going to be armed with a very hefty war-chest this summer if respected Liverpool correspondent for the Echo James Pearce is right…

The journalist held a Q&A on Liverpool’s sub-reddit today and was happy to divulge information on transfer targets and prospective budgets.

According to Pearce, the boss could spend up to £130m, which would be the most of any Liverpool manager in history during one window – even more incredible considering Klopp’s current net-spend since taking over is negative.

“I’m not aware of any exact amount being put on Klopp’s kitty but the way that he’s been talking about competing at the top end of the market means he’s clearly aiming high,” he began. “There’s certainly a realisation from FSG that the squad needs strengthening with established talent. I’d expect it to be the biggest spending spree in the club’s history. How much? My guess would be around £120million/£130million but that figure would include sales.”

Sales will include players like Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Sturridge, who will hopefully raise us around £50m, while Kevin Stewart, Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic will also generate funds.

We’re not bothered by how much Klopp spends of course, just that he brings in the right players… His targets (Van Dijk, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain) would improve not only our squad but our starting XI. Acquiring them easily will be a much trickier matter.
