Time for change? Klopp talks up exciting new position for Coutinho

Dropping Philippe Coutinho into a deeper midfield role is something Reds have pondered over for some time and an adjustment that both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp have previously experimented with.

Though doing so has showcased exciting possibilities, it has failed to ever develop into a long-term option for Liverpool.

That said, it appears Klopp is ready to once again put his faith in the Brazilian’s ability to adapt and turn a focus towards helping him make the position his own.

“Can we work on different things with Phil? Yes of course,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.

“He plays at the moment kind of wing ’10’ but he can also play as a No 8. That is possible and maybe he will have more influence and we can involve another player on the wing.”

“That would make us stronger for sure, having his creativity in the middle of the park. He would have to adapt to that. He is young, full of talent and I’m pretty sure he thinks he is in the right place.”

Giving Coutinho the freedom to roam and collect the ball from deeper positions in order to feed the runners ahead of him poses as an attractive prospect, especially when considering the possible addition of a winger with similar traits to Sadio Mane.

Moving him into midfield promises to be vital in helping him mould into a leader in his own right in terms of there being a greater need to take responsibility and consistently put himself at the heart of Liverpool’s attacking play.

There is no doubting he has the technical ability to excel in the role.
