Liverpool laugh off ‘baffling’ transfer rumour involving 36-year-old

Just as we said the minute the story first began to circle, Iker Casillas is not joining Liverpool – and as we predicted – the original article in Spanish outlet AS was completely fabricated.

Oh the joys of the summer transfer window…

With Ladbrokes suspending betting on the legendary goalkeeper, currently of Porto, signing, the Echo checked the rumour out and got a very clear answer from the club.

‘The Reds are baffled by the reports,’ wrote James Pearce, who reiterated our point that Jurgen Klopp is very happy with his current goalkeeping options.

Simon Mignolet has improved enough to be considered a long-term no.1 prospect, while Loris Karius is a very talented backup option. Danny Ward will return from a successful loan spell at Huddersfield as well.

Alex Manninger is retiring though, meaning it’s quite possible that we’ll bring in an older man as a third-choice, if injury or suspension happens to strike down Mignolet or Karius.

But rest assured, it won’t be Casillas.
