It was reported last week that Manchester City had all but wrapped up deals for Virgil Van Dijk and Benjamin Mendy, but a few days later – our rivals are out of the running for both…
Not only does Southampton’s Dutchman want to move to Liverpool instead, effectively making it a one-horse race for his services, but City are now refusing to meet Monaco’s £40m valuation for the French left-back.

Instead, Sky Sports report that they’re closing in on Ryan Bertrand, the former Chelsea man who’s emerged as England’s left-back in Danny Rose’s absence.
Bertrand is a decent fullback, but he’s not nearly as exotic or promising as Champions League semi-finalist Mendy – and we’ve no problem with City wrapping up the deal.
Liverpool were linked with Mendy ourselves, but there’s no suggestions we’ll be willing to meet the 22-year-old’s whopping asking price either.
Instead, we’ve been linked today to Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam, who’ll be cheaper than Mendy – but offers similar dynamism down the left flank.
