Liverpool U-Turn on talented centre-back

Posted by

It was reported just yesterday in the Echo that Joe Gomez had pre-season to prove to Jurgen Klopp that he should remain part of the first-team squad, but according to Sky Sports today, the teenager has been given assurances he’ll stay on Merseyside.

There’s been constant speculation that the Englishman, who still hasn’t started a Premier League game under Klopp, would leave on loan – but according to the latest update – will fight for minutes at Liverpool in 2017/18.

Liverpool are targeting another centre-back and already have Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip on the books, so competition for game-time is going to be stiff.

This comes after it emerged yesterday that Liverpool want to keep Danny Ward and rejected Huddersfield’s approach.

In both the cases of Ward and Gomez, it would make sense to us to see them leant to a Premier League outfit for the upcoming season, as they’re only going to digress sat on our bench, or worse, out of the squad entirely.

Perhaps Klopp wants to have them round during pre-season and check them out at close-quarters during the summer friendlies, and may decide on what’s best for their development after that.
