Klopp: I will buy a new ‘experienced’ central midfielder

Jurgen Klopp says he will do everything he can to buy a new centre-mid before the transfer window closes.

We’ve sold Lucas and Kevin Stewart this summer, while Adam Lallana is out for four months with a thigh injury.

Coutinho may never play for us again meaning the boss currently has four options for three spots: Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Gini Wijnaldum and Marko Grujic (although James Milner can play centrally too).

“We don’t have too many midfield players in the moment who have experience,” Klopp told the Echo.

“Are we looking still for players? Yes. That is the truth. But we were looking for players before Adam was injured. Now he is injured and Phil is injured so we have two less.

“It doesn’t make the situation more comfortable. You cannot be really prepared for situations like this but we have time.

“I’m just thinking about Watford and how we can start the season. But the 31st (August)? Yes, I know. Everything can happen. But I’m not sure that they will happen. If I were sure, they would probably already be in or whatever. It’s still open for business.”

Liverpool were linked to Arturo Vidal last week, although we’d be mighty surprised if we secured the world-class Chilean, having failed on our primary target Naby Keita.

The problem for Liverpool is if we do relent and allow Coutinho an exit, we’ll be armed with a ferocious amount of money but be inclined to purchase a playmaker as well.

At this stage of the window, there’s simply not too many players available.
