World Cup winner, rated at €20m, linked to Liverpool after having captaincy removed

Liverpool are considering a bid for wantaway German World Cup winner and former Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes, reports DW Sports, who rate the centre-back at €20m.

The 29-year-old defender has recently had his captaincy taken off him and has revealed that he’d happily move abroad after spending his entire career with Schalke since making his debut in 2007.

‘It is clear that I received enquiries from other clubs,’ he revealed

‘It is in the nature of the matter that my advisor checks and answers this. I have always said that I can rule out a move within the league [Bundesliga] and I can imagine a change abroad.’

Liverpool’s priority is Virgil van Dijk and all the trusted correspondents state that it’s either the Dutchman or nobody with less than ten days of the window remaining.

But Howedes has elite level experience, is a proven leader and somebody who’d definitely boost our backline at the mooted cost.

What’s more, he played alongside Joel Matip for years in Germany, before we acquired the Cameroonian last summer.

It’s an avenue we don’t expect the club to go down, but one we’d like them to consider.
