The wantaway Dutchman played no part in Southampton’s pre-season after he handed in a transfer request, but the St. Mary’s outfit flatly refused to sell and Liverpool couldn’t submit a bid after being reported to the Premier League for an illegal approach in June.

Van Dijk was devastated and published an inflammatory statement which criticised Southampton and was banished to training with the Under-23s as a result.

Now the transfer window is closed, new boss Maurcio Pellegrino has brought the Dutch powerhouse back into the fold – with his team-mates happy to have him back.

It’ll be a few weeks before the 26-year-old plays again, as he lacks match fitness, but it looks like he’ll be back on the field by the end of this month.

We’ll find it tough watching van Dijk from afar, but Liverpool’s interest is still very much real.

Jurgen Klopp wants van Dijk and van Dijk only, and at some point, another offer will be lodged. If not in January, then next summer.
