Liverpool fans left Anfield far from satisfied on Wednesday night as they watched their team relinquish a lead to draw 2-2 in their Champions League group stage opener against Sevilla.
After going behind in the sixth minute, the Reds responded in scintillating fashion to turn things around and enter half-time with a 2-1 lead, courtesy of Roberto Firmino’s close range equaliser and Mohamed Salah’s deflected strike.
Jurgen Klopp’s men failed, however, to carry that momentum into the second half and were guilty of wasting several chances to finish things off.
Whilst a lack of conviction in the final third became costly, it proved to be familiar defensive frailties that hurt Liverpool the most.
This was evident after the break when the Reds defence failed to react to a quick throw in, before leaving space for the dangerous Joaquin Correa to turn and slot home past Loris Karius.
The hosts couldn’t find a response in what became a sloppy finish to a disappointing game.
In truth, it was a contest Liverpool should have put to bed.
Here’s how Reds reacted…
Sick of this If we want to win trophies we need a back four who can stay switched on and deal with seeing out games! #LFC

How on Earth we didn’t win that game. I love Bobby but u have to score that & their first goal should not happen #LFC

We knew not buying a defender during summer will cost Liverpool his season. And it’s already proving to be exactly that. #BBCfootball #lfc

Well that hurt!
Should have been 5-1, not 2-2. Some bad passing in final 3rd & a missed penalty. Pity.#LFC— Jaka Petric (@JakaPetric) September 13, 2017
Shot ourselves in the foot again. If we are not going to learn from our mistakes then get used to a lot of disappointments again. #Lfc

Tonight proves how far we’ve fallen behind against the elite of Europe. Act like a small club, you’ll become one. #LFC

Frustrating but we should definitely still get through this group. If we don’t it is a catastrophic failure. #LFC

Not a terrible result but it’s irrelevant because we won’t achieve anything with that defence, regardless of how good we are attacking #lfc

Basically that was as #LFC as it can be. Lots of chances going forward, gifted a few in the other direction. Disappoining to say the least.
