Mignolet the bigger man in long-standing Grobbelaar row

We like this from Simon Mignolet, who after years of stick, has never reacted anything but professionally to it.

One of his biggest detractors is Bruce Grobbelaar, Liverpool’s legendary former stopper who’s consistently ridiculed the Belgian.

Infamously, Grobbelaar once described him as ‘worse than Dracula’ [Guardian] in 2014 before claiming on talkSPORT a year later that, “I’ve got a goalkeeper in Canada, a 24-year-old, who is better than Mignolet and is just as good of a shotstopper. He is more of a package than Mignolet is.”

But today, Mignolet wished Grobbelaar a happy birthday – suggesting that ‘after all’ that has been said, the Zimbabwean is ‘still a legend’.

Good for you, Simon.

The stopper is very much Jurgen Klopp’s no.1 in the Premier League, though Loris Karius keeps net in Europe and Danny Ward in the domestic cup competitions.

Many fans still have doubts about Mignolet’s capability, but there’s not many goals we’ve conceded this season that can necessarily be declared ‘his fault’.

The reality is that the opposition have had it way too easy due to rubbish defending and a lack of cover from midfield.

Either way, we really need the 29-year-old to have a good game against Manchester United, one of Europe’s in-form sides, next weekend.
