LFC boss hints at January transfer for popular 28-goal forward

Liverpool U23s boss Neil Critchley admits Harry Wilson will soon need to make the step up to first team football in aid of continuing his development.

Wilson has been prolific for the Reds’ second-string side for the past couple of years and has been unlucky not to be granted the same senior opportunities that the likes of Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold have.

Having comfortably established himself as a star man in Critchley’s team, Wilson looks closer than ever to taking the next significant stride in his career.

That could mean a temporary move in January as a means in which to gain valuable experience at a more competitive level.

“We were speaking with Harry the other day and saying to him if you look at where he was from the first time I came to the club four years ago to where he is now, he has made great progress when you think about the things he’s had to deal with, the highs, the lows, the setbacks that he’s had,” Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It’s great to see how much his game has developed for the staff because that’s what development is. That is starting someone with a journey and seeing how they end up and Harry is obviously still on that journey.”

“He’s part of the way through that journey but it’s not finished yet. I think Harry has made massive strides and for me to get some time with him over the next few months is brilliant.”

“I think at some point he will go into a senior environment and play games when he is going to get tested both physically and mentally.”

“He’s going to have to do that [in games] twice a week to see if he can cope with the demands of men’s football. I’m sure if keeps playing well for us between now and January then maybe he will have some more options then.”

A loan move would be the natural progression for a player who has got near to everything he could possibly get out of life with the U23s.

Whilst continuing to get minutes in the youth setup remains a solid and effective path, the Welshman would undoubtedly benefit from a new test.

His consistency over the past few months has somewhat dismissed the risk of not returning to Liverpool and being given the opportunity to impress.

With Jurgen Klopp at the helm, he’ll get his chance at some stage.

In the meantime, there is likely to be a host of Championship promotion hopefuls readying offers for the 20-year-old.
