Ben Woodburn is about to take the next significant stride in what has been a glowing start to his Liverpool career.

The Reds look set to tie down one of their star prospects for years to come with a new long-term deal to follow up Woodburn’s first professional contract, which he signed only a year ago.

His extension will come as a reward for his impressive development over the past couple of seasons, reports the Liverpool Echo’s Neil Jones.

Woodburn, who turned 18 today, has cruised through the club’s youth ranks and already caught the eye at senior level.

Having proven to be a class above a lot of his opponents in the U23s last season, the teenager was handed a call-up to the first team and has since managed a total of 10 appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

His rise served up a debut to remember as the Welshman scored in a League Cup win over Leeds United to smash Michael Owen’s record and become Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer.

Inevitable hype surrounding his potential has since been expertly managed by both Woodburn himself and by Klopp, who has been sure to protect the youngster in aid of his progression.

Though the forward has continued to ply his trade in Neil Critchley’s U23s on occasions, he has also regularly trained with the first team and gained valuable experience on the club’s various pre-season tours during the summer.

Woodburn also recently made a name for himself on the international stage by scoring a superb debut goal for Wales in September’s World Cup qualifier.

It’s been quite a year. This is just the beginning.
