Bayern’s Jupp Heynckes has cruelly cut down Emre Can

So long as Bayern Munich are managed by Jupp Heynckes, we cannot imagine Emre Can will sign a deal with his former club.

That’s after reading quotes from the veteran boss about our German midfielder, who he managed during Can’s original spell at Bayern.

The 23-year-old’s contract at Liverpool expires at the end of this season and it’s looking like he’ll depart on a Bosman.

But we’d now suggest Juventus are a more likely option than Bayern…

“There are certain criteria that a player should meet,” the 72-year-old told Kicker. “I had Can for a few months in 12/13. He trained instep kicking with a pendulum ball. This is the ABC of football, this should be already a mastered skill at this point.

“He is a good boy. He has developed nicely, he’s dynamic, powerful, but in my opinion, if Bayern wants to be a dominating team in Europe, there should be a specific player with certain abilities in every position. For me it’s also important that the footballing concept is at a very high level, not only physicality, speed, no, many abilities play a role. That’s how I see it.”

In many ways, the manager’s comments mirror many Liverpool fan frustrations about the mightily talented Can.

Sometimes he appears to have it all and is capable of genius, as demonstrated by his goal against Watford last term, but far too often he appears to lack Football IQ – the ability to make effective real time decisions on the pitch.

In midfield, this is crucial – and something we hope Naby Keita can provide us when the Guinean arrives from Rb Leipzig next summer.
