‘His best performance’ Klopp picks LFC man for special praise (Not Mo Salah…)

Despite our 3-0 victory over Southampton yesterday, which featured brilliant attacking football in droves, Jurgen Klopp took time to praise a defender.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was very impressive at right-back, coming in for Joe Gomez, who needed a rest following his exploits for England.

We’ve been wowed by the teenager’s offensive contributions so far (he’s scored two goals in the Champions League), but it was improved defensive understanding that earned Klopp’s compliments.

“He is another type of defender. When he started he was a proper winger and sometimes a defender,” Klopp told the Echo.

“Now he’s a proper defender and sometimes a winger. It makes much more sense in his position.

“He was really good today. It was probably his best performance over 90 minutes in defending. What he can do offensively everybody already knows.”

In years to come we can see Gomez at centre-back and Trent marauding up the right, but for now, they’re having to share the position in Nathaniel Clyne’s absence.

This is absolutely fine by us. We’re obviously gutted for Clyne in that he’s going to miss virtually an entire campaign with injury, but it’s been very beneficial for the two youngsters.

Without an opportunity, they’d both still be in the U23s, proving that sometimes, managers need to throw talented youngsters in at the deep end.
